Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited is set to begin crude oil processing at its Barmer refinery in Rajasthan

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited is set to begin crude oil processing at its Barmer refinery in Rajasthan by the end of the current month, marking a key milestone in one of India’s most significant refining and petrochemical projects.

The refinery, being developed through HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited, has already received crude supplies and is preparing to operationalise its crude distillation unit. Once processing begins, the facility will gradually scale up operations in line with commissioning schedules and stabilisation protocols.

With a designed capacity of about 9 million tonnes per annum (around 180,000 barrels per day), the Barmer refinery will substantially enhance HPCL’s overall refining capability. Following commissioning, HPCL is expected to emerge as the second-largest public sector oil refiner in the country, strengthening its position in India’s downstream petroleum sector.

The project forms part of HPCL’s broader strategy to expand refining capacity and meet growing domestic demand for transportation fuels and petrochemical products. In addition to the new Barmer unit, HPCL operates refineries at Mumbai and Visakhapatnam and holds a stake in the Bathinda refinery, which is also undergoing capacity expansion.

The Barmer refinery is expected to play a critical role in improving fuel availability, reducing import dependence, and supporting economic development in Rajasthan and adjoining regions. Over the long term, the integrated refinery–petrochemical complex is also expected to contribute to value-added product output and job creation.

The start of crude processing represents a major transition for the project, moving it from the construction phase to operational execution, with further units scheduled to be commissioned in stages in the coming months.
