GreenCell Mobility has deployed 75 electric buses in Puducherry, marking a significant step forward in the Union Territory’s transition towards zero-emission public transportation. The initiative reinforces the company’s position as India’s largest electric bus platform and strengthens the region’s clean mobility roadmap.
The deployment was recently commemorated at a Government of Puducherry event led by Narendra Modi, underscoring the strategic importance of sustainable public transport in India’s broader decarbonisation agenda.
Under the Puducherry electric bus project, GreenCell Mobility is introducing 75 fully air-conditioned electric city buses, including 25 nine-metre and 50 twelve-metre units. Designed to address both standard and trunk route requirements, the buses are equipped with higher battery capacities to ensure optimal range and operational efficiency tailored to the region’s transit needs.
For this deployment, GreenCell Mobility has partnered with EKA Mobility for the supply and rollout of the buses. Operations will be managed from the Mettupalayam Bus Depot, strengthening last-mile connectivity while enhancing reliability, service quality, and commuter convenience across key corridors.
The induction of the electric fleet is expected to significantly reduce tailpipe emissions and improve operational performance across trunk and feeder routes. Each bus is integrated with advanced systems, including an Integrated Transport Management System (ITMS), Passenger Information Systems, real-time Vehicle Tracking Systems, internal and reversing cameras, and infrastructure designed for differently-abled passengers—ensuring safe, accessible, and technology-enabled mobility.
Commenting on the milestone, Devndra Chawla, Managing Director and CEO of GreenCell Mobility, stated that the company remains committed to building sustainable public transport ecosystems across emerging urban centres. He emphasised that, backed by strong institutional capital and supportive policy frameworks, the company is focused on delivering reliable, technology-driven electric mobility solutions for cities and Union Territories nationwide.
Beyond Puducherry, GreenCell Mobility is executing large-scale electric city bus projects across multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh (700 buses), Surat (150 buses), Madhya Pradesh (582 buses), Andhra Pradesh (750 buses), Telangana (915 buses), Karnataka (400 buses), and Delhi (570 buses). Additionally, the company operates 50 intercity electric buses for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation, expanding its footprint across both urban and intercity segments.
Backed by Eversource Capital, GreenCell Mobility currently manages a fleet of over 1,200 electric buses operating across intra-city and inter-city routes, supported by more than 270 charging stations nationwide. With projects awarded under the National E-Bus Program and the PM Seva E-Mobility Program, the company continues to scale its Electric Mobility-as-a-Service (eMaaS) model in partnership with governments and transport authorities to deliver future-ready, zero-emission mobility infrastructure.
Through its intercity brand NueGo, the company operates India’s largest premium electric coach service, with over 300 electric coaches connecting more than 100 destinations, further reinforcing its leadership in sustainable mobility solutions.
