Ampere, the electric two-wheeler brand of Greaves Electric Mobility, is set to launch its ‘ICE Breaker’ electric scooter, the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter, to challenge India’s petrol scooter market and further strengthen its position in the electric two-wheeler segment.
Scheduled for release in FY27, the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter has been engineered to deliver improved performance while offering better ownership economics. The product is positioned to compete with high-selling petrol scooters in the sub-Rs 1 lakh category. While India’s mass scooter segment has traditionally been dominated by petrol vehicles known for practical city performance and quick refuelling, the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter aims to establish itself as an EV alternative capable of competing directly with petrol scooters.
Speaking about the upcoming launch, Mr Vikas Singh, Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer, Greaves Electric Mobility, said, “The sub-Rs 1 lakh category represents the single largest volume opportunity in India’s scooter market, yet remains ICE-led. With the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter, we are entering the E2W market with a clear sight of competing with the largest-selling ICE product offering, enhancing green mobility, and improving software integration. It also reflects our focus on disciplined growth, building scale in high-volume segments with products that are commercially sustainable and engineered for real-world Indian usage.”
In India, petrol and EV scooters priced below ₹1 lakh largely cater to the entry-level segment, offering modest performance with moderate torque and limited hill-climbing capability. Consumers typically need to spend over ₹1 lakh to access higher-performance petrol scooters, while also continuing to incur significant running and maintenance expenses over time, leading to a higher overall cost of ownership.
To address this gap, the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter has been specifically engineered to deliver improved performance and stronger value in the segment. The scooter is designed to offer higher torque compared with the largest-selling ICE scooters, enabling quicker pickup and stronger load-carrying capability. It is also expected to provide improved gradeability, with stronger hill-climb performance compared with conventional value EVs and typical ICE scooters in the sub-Rs 1 lakh price band, thereby enhancing rider confidence on hilly terrains and steep flyovers.
In addition, the scooter aims to strengthen the cost and convenience advantage for users. While running costs on ICE scooters remain relatively high, the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter is designed to reduce running costs by 50 per cent, while offering benefits such as home charging, reverse mode, and reduced maintenance. The model will also introduce value-added features, including a software-defined vehicle architecture with Over-The-Air (OTA) update capability, AI/ML-enabled connectivity, and remote diagnostics and prognostics.
By challenging the established benchmarks of ICE-comparable performance and leveraging the inherent advantages of electric mobility, the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter is being positioned not merely as a value EV but as a mass-market, premium alternative to high-selling petrol scooters.
Additionally, under GEML’s Ampere brand, customers will have access to a broader range of electric scooters. With the introduction of the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter, the brand is expanding its portfolio for first-time EV buyers seeking performance comparable to petrol scooters, along with the long-term benefits of electric mobility.
With more than 3 lakh vehicles on the road, over 400 service touchpoints, and continued geographic expansion across the country, Greaves Electric Mobility remains focused on scalable and contribution-positive growth. The Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter represents another step in GEML’s mission to democratise smart and sustainable mobility, making electric scooters accessible, practical, and competitive for Indian families.
