The government is closely monitoring the crude oil situation and broader developments in West Asia following the escalation of conflict in the region, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said, underlining the importance of the region for India’s energy security and economic interests.
Speaking in Parliament, Jaishankar said the situation in West Asia is of serious concern for India, as the region remains a crucial supplier of oil and gas and also hosts a large Indian diaspora. He noted that developments in the region could have implications for energy markets, shipping routes and the safety of Indian nationals.
The minister highlighted that nearly one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries, making stability in West Asia extremely important for India. He added that the government is keeping a close watch on the safety and welfare of Indian citizens in the region and is prepared to take necessary steps if the situation demands.
Jaishankar said the government is also monitoring the possible impact of the crisis on global crude oil supplies and prices, as any disruption in the region could affect energy markets worldwide. West Asia accounts for a significant share of India’s crude oil imports, making developments there critical for the country’s energy security.
He further pointed out that instability in the region could affect major shipping routes used for global oil transportation, particularly those passing through strategic maritime corridors. Any disruption in these routes could have implications for supply chains and energy prices.
The government is coordinating with relevant ministries and agencies to assess the evolving situation and ensure that India’s energy needs and the interests of consumers are safeguarded. Officials are also keeping track of market movements and supply dynamics as tensions continue.
Reiterating India’s diplomatic position, Jaishankar stressed the need for dialogue, diplomacy and restraint to reduce tensions and restore stability in the region. He said peaceful resolution of conflicts remains the most effective way to ensure stability in West Asia and protect global economic interests.
The government continues to monitor developments closely as the situation evolves, given the region’s importance for energy supplies, trade routes and the welfare of Indian nationals living and working there.
