Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to ensure the time bound implementation of 55 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed for pumped storage hydro power projects in the state. The instruction was given during a review meeting held at the state legislature complex to assess progress on the projects aimed at strengthening Maharashtra’s power sector.
According to details shared during the meeting, Maharashtra has signed 55 MoUs with various companies to develop pumped storage projects with a total proposed capacity of 78,215 MW. The projects are expected to attract an investment of around ₹4,16,701 crore and generate nearly 1,27,990 employment opportunities.
Fadnavis noted that six projects with a combined capacity of 10,300 MW have already received approval for their Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) from the Central Electricity Authority, and work on these projects has begun. In addition, five more projects with a capacity of 8,200 MW are currently at the DPR approval stage.
He instructed all departments involved to coordinate closely and ensure that the projects are executed within the planned timelines so that the state can quickly strengthen its energy infrastructure and support rising electricity demand.
Several major energy companies have signed agreements with the state for these pumped storage projects. These include Adani Green Energy, NHPC, JSW Energy, THDC India, Torrent Power, Tata Power Company, NTPC, JSW Neo Energy, Megha Engineering & Infrastructures, Welspun New Energy, ReNew Hydro Power, Mahagenco Renewable Energy, and Avaada Aqua Batteries.
The chief minister said the upcoming projects will significantly increase Maharashtra’s power generation capacity, support industrial growth, and create large scale employment, while also strengthening the state’s ability to integrate renewable energy into the grid through pumped storage systems.
