French energy major ENGIE has secured a landmark 280 MW / 560 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) contract in Gujarat, marking the company’s debut in utility-scale storage in India. The contract was awarded through a competitive auction conducted by Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL).
This win is part of a larger 2 GW / 4 GWh national tender and brings ENGIE’s total clean energy capacity in India to approximately 2.75 GW, according to the company.
Under the terms of the deal, ENGIE will build, own, and operate the battery assets, which will be connected to Gujarat’s intrastate transmission system. The storage system must be made available to GUVNL for “on-demand” charging and discharging, enabling better grid management and flexibility.
The project is expected to play a key role in balancing the grid, especially as India rapidly scales up its solar and wind capacity. By storing excess renewable energy and discharging it during peak demand periods, the system will help smooth out variability and reduce curtailment of clean power.
Amit Jain, CEO & Country Manager of ENGIE India and Managing Director for Renewables & Batteries in India and Southeast Asia, commented on the award, saying: “India’s renewable story is entering a decisive phase, where scale must be matched with firmness, flexibility and digital intelligence. Storage is the bridge that will take us there.”
Globally, ENGIE is aiming for 95 GW of installed renewable and storage capacity by 2030. The company currently operates around 55 GW worldwide, with another 6 GW under construction, underscoring the strategic importance of India’s storage market to its global ambitions.
The tariffs for the GUVNL auction were discovered in the range of INR 1.85 lakh to INR 1.89 lakh per MW per month, with ENGIE winning its allocation at a bid of INR 1.87 lakh.
Analysts say this move will strengthen ENGIE’s role in India’s energy transition, especially as the country looks to build “firm, future-ready” renewable infrastructure that can reliably meet demand even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.
