EV charging stations being installed in Delhi as part of city’s plan to add 7,000 new stations and expand electric bus fleet in 2026 to reduce air pollution

Delhi is set to significantly expand its clean mobility infrastructure this year, with plans to install around 7,000 additional electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and add over 2,000 buses to its fleet.

The city government is finalising a revised electric vehicle policy, expected to be notified by March 2026 when the current policy expires, according to Officials. The new policy aims to accelerate EV adoption and support Delhi’s ambitious air quality goals.

Currently, Delhi operates a total of 5,245 buses, including 3,377 electric units. A recent high-level review on air quality management noted that the city requires a total fleet of 11,000 buses to meet demand. Officials have shared a month-wise action plan targeting the addition of 2,468 new buses this year, although some older CNG buses may be phased out over the same period.

On the charging infrastructure front, official data indicates that Delhi had 8,849 EV charging stations as of December 2025, well below the estimated requirement of 36,150. The planned addition of 7,000 stations will raise the total to 15,849, with many installations coming up at Rapid Rail and Delhi Metro locations through state power distribution companies.

Traffic management is also being addressed in coordination with Delhi Traffic Police. Authorities have identified 62 congestion hotspots and outlined 215 corrective measures, of which 83 have been completed. About 50 remaining measures are expected to be implemented within six months.

Since the launch of the government’s online portal for aggregators and delivery service providers in 2023, nearly seven lakh vehicles have been registered, reflecting growing interest in electric and clean mobility solutions.
