Delhi is set to strengthen its clean mobility push with the addition of 200 new electric buses this month, further expanding the capital’s public transport network based on zero-emission vehicles.
The city currently operates over 4,000 electric buses, making it one of the largest electric bus fleets in the country. With additional procurements planned during the year, authorities aim to increase the total EV bus fleet to around 7,500 by the end of the year, significantly accelerating the transition toward sustainable public transportation.
The expansion forms part of a broader effort to modernise Delhi’s public transport infrastructure while reducing air pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. Alongside fleet growth, the government is also strengthening supporting infrastructure, including the development of EV charging facilities across bus depots.
Charging infrastructure has already been installed at 44 depots across the city, while additional charging networks are being developed at 36 more locations to support the expanding electric fleet.
Authorities are also reviewing new transport infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity and operational efficiency. These include plans to develop a new interstate bus terminal in Bhalswa on reclaimed landfill land, which is expected to enhance interstate connectivity and passenger services in northern Delhi.
In addition, a feasibility study is underway for a new Delhi Transport Corporation depot along the Urban Extension Road-II corridor, considering the rapid urban expansion and increasing demand for public transport in the region.
The expansion of the electric bus fleet is expected to play a crucial role in building a cleaner, more efficient and environmentally sustainable urban transport system for the national capital.
