Delhi Power Rates May Rise from April as Govt Plans to Clear Discom Dues

Electricity rates in Delhi are expected to rise from April as the Delhi government moves to disburse over Rs 38,000 crore in pending dues to the city’s three power distribution companies (discoms), officials said on Sunday.

The government plans to provide subsidies to soften the impact on consumers, ensuring the tariff adjustment does not unduly burden households.

The move follows a Supreme Court directive in August last year, which ordered that regulatory assets—including carrying costs of Rs 27,200 crore—be cleared for Delhi’s private discoms, BRPL, BYPL, and TPDDL, over a seven-year period.

Regulatory assets, representing costs expected to be recovered in the future, have accumulated sharply due to the absence of a power tariff hike for a decade under the Aam Aadmi Party administration.

According to the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), the city’s power regulator, total regulatory assets now stand at Rs 38,552 crore, as reported to the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL) in January.

The breakdown of outstanding dues includes Rs 19,174 crore for BRPL, Rs 12,333 crore for BYPL, and Rs 7,046 crore for TPDDL. These amounts reflect approved expenditures incurred by the discoms in supplying electricity to the city.
