Chhattisgarh Unveils Roadmap to Become India’s Energy Capital

The Chhattisgarh government has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap aimed at positioning the state as India’s energy capital, outlining large-scale capacity expansion plans, infrastructure upgrades and investment commitments across conventional and renewable power segments.

State Energy Secretary Dr Rohit Yadav said Chhattisgarh’s total installed power generation capacity currently stands at 30,671 MW, catering to over 65 lakh electricity consumers. The state remains a power-surplus region and plays a key role in supplying electricity to other parts of the country.

As part of its long-term strategy, the government has signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) for adding 32,100 MW of new power generation capacity, with a proposed investment of approximately ₹3.40 lakh crore. The planned additions include:

  • 12,100 MW of thermal power capacity
  • 4,200 MW of nuclear power projects
  • 2,500 MW of solar power installations
  • 13,300 MW of pumped storage projects

The officials said the expansion plan is designed to strengthen base-load generation, meet peak demand requirements and enhance grid stability. The inclusion of significant pumped storage capacity is aimed at supporting renewable integration and ensuring round-the-clock power availability.

The roadmap also focuses on strengthening transmission and distribution infrastructure to facilitate efficient evacuation of power from upcoming projects. Investments in grid modernisation, system reliability and operational efficiency form part of the broader strategy to support large-scale capacity addition.

Chhattisgarh’s energy vision aligns with national objectives of energy security, industrial growth and clean energy transition. While thermal power remains a major contributor due to the state’s substantial coal reserves, the government is placing increasing emphasis on renewable energy and storage solutions to diversify the generation mix.

The officials stated that the proposed investments are expected to drive industrial development, generate employment and enhance the state’s role as a major energy supplier to neighbouring regions. Policy support, streamlined approvals and coordination with central agencies are being prioritised to ensure timely project execution.

The government indicated that implementation will be monitored through phased execution plans, with periodic reviews to track progress against capacity and investment targets.

With significant existing capacity and ambitious expansion commitments, Chhattisgarh aims to consolidate its position as a key contributor to India’s evolving power sector landscape.
