BPCL bioethanol refinery Bargarh Odisha 2G ethanol plant India green fuel project

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has launched its second-generation (2G) bioethanol refinery in Bargarh, Odisha, marking a major step forward in India’s transition toward cleaner and sustainable fuels.

The refinery is part of an integrated 1G–2G bioethanol project, designed to produce ethanol using both agricultural residues like rice straw (2G) and conventional feedstock (1G), making it a first-of-its-kind integrated facility in the country.

With a capacity of around 100 kilolitres per day for 2G ethanol, the plant converts agri-waste into fuel, supporting the government’s Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme and reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports.

The project represents a significant advancement in waste-to-wealth technology, helping tackle stubble burning while promoting a circular economy by creating value from agricultural residues.

Beyond environmental benefits, the refinery is expected to boost rural incomes, generate employment, and strengthen local supply chains, particularly by creating demand for biomass feedstock sourced from farmers.

The launch underscores BPCL’s growing focus on biofuels and energy diversification, aligning with India’s broader goals of decarbonisation, energy security, and sustainable growth.
