Assam plans exports to Bangladesh through cross-border power transmission infrastructure

Assam is preparing to explore electricity exports to Bangladesh as it looks to monetise surplus power generation and strengthen regional energy cooperation in Northeast India. The move follows the successful example set by Tripura, which has been supplying electricity to Bangladesh for several years.

The proposal was discussed during recent interactions between the leadership of Assam and Tripura, where Assam expressed interest in routing its excess electricity through Tripura’s existing cross-border transmission infrastructure. Tripura currently exports over 100 MW of power to Bangladesh under a bilateral arrangement that has demonstrated both technical feasibility and commercial viability.

Officials indicated that Assam’s surplus power could be transmitted using the same connectivity framework, subject to regulatory approvals and the extension of existing agreements. The approach would allow Assam to leverage established infrastructure rather than invest in new cross-border links in the initial phase.

Tripura’s power export agreement with Bangladesh is due for renewal in 2026, and any expansion to include Assam would be aligned with discussions on extending and scaling the arrangement. If implemented, the plan could open new revenue streams for Assam’s power sector while helping Bangladesh meet its growing electricity demand.

The proposed cross-border trade also reflects a broader push to enhance grid integration in the Northeast and position the region as an emerging hub for power generation and energy exchange. Beyond commercial benefits, the initiative is expected to strengthen economic ties and energy cooperation between India and Bangladesh.
