Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) has achieved a major milestone by successfully delivering and installing 1 crore electricity smart meters across distribution companies (discoms), becoming the first company in India and potentially globally to reach this scale. The company plans to deliver the next 1 crore smart meters in the coming financial year, reinforcing its leadership in India’s smart metering drive.
This achievement comes well ahead of AESL’s stated guidance of reaching the 1 crore mark by March 31, 2026. As India’s leading Advanced Metering Infrastructure Service Provider (AMISP), AESL holds a mandate to install approximately 2.5 crore smart meters across five states. With an industry-leading installation pace of around 25,000 meters per day, AESL has set new benchmarks for execution and scale.
The milestone highlights AESL’s role in accelerating digital transformation in retail electricity distribution under the Government of India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). AESL’s smart metering network provides real-time consumption data, improves billing transparency, strengthens utility operations, and supports grid modernisation, key objectives of India’s nationwide smart metering rollout.
Commenting on the achievement, Kandarp Patel, Chief Executive Officer, Adani Energy Solutions, said that reaching an installed base of 1 crore smart meters reflects the company’s execution excellence and strong collaboration with distribution utilities and consumers. He noted that smart meters act as catalysts for empowering consumers with real-time usage insights, improving grid reliability, reducing losses, and enabling efficient energy management, while supporting India’s digital energy transition.
AESL attributes its highest-in-the-industry daily installation rate to an integrated, ecosystem-driven approach. The company has strengthened control and visibility across the value chain through tie-ups with group entities such as Adani Esyasoft Smart Solutions for smart metering and IoT capabilities, and AdaniConneX for local data hosting. AESL has also partnered with tier I meter manufacturers to ensure timely deliveries and platform relevance throughout the contract period. In parallel, through the group’s CSR arm, the company is training a large workforce of technicians to support meter installations, collectively forming a key execution differentiator.
Having commenced its smart metering journey in 2024, AESL has achieved the 1 crore milestone in approximately 24 months, marking the fastest installation pace in the country.
Under the RDSS programme, India aims to replace 25 crore conventional electricity meters with advanced smart meters to modernize the power distribution sector. Smart meters are designed to improve billing accuracy, enhance demand forecasting, reduce Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses, support renewable energy integration, and enable more efficient grid planning and operations, while providing deeper insights into consumer consumption patterns.
