ABB India Ltd. has completed a major modernisation initiative for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (BPCL) Vadinar–Bina Pipeline (VBPL), reinforcing the reliability of one of India’s most critical energy infrastructure assets. The 935-km cross-country crude oil pipeline, which supplies 7.80 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to the Bina refinery, plays a vital role in supporting the country’s growing energy needs.
As part of the project, ABB undertook a comprehensive upgrade of the pipeline’s automation and monitoring systems. The scope included modernisation of the ABB Ability™ SCADAvantage system, replacement of 35 Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) across pumping stations, pigging stations, and sectionalising valve stations, and deployment of new SCADA servers at both Vadinar and Bina terminals.
The upgrade also focused strongly on cybersecurity and system resilience. ABB implemented advanced network protection measures, system hardening, and centralised monitoring to enhance operational security and protect the pipeline against cyber threats. Disaster recovery servers and failover capabilities were established at both ends of the pipeline to ensure uninterrupted operations under all conditions.
Commenting on the project, Mr. Rajshekhar S, Head (Pipelines), Vadinar–Bina Pipeline, BPCL, said the modernisation was completed smoothly without any shutdowns. He noted that the enhanced cybersecurity framework and improved system resilience have significantly strengthened the reliability of the pipeline, enabling continuous operations even during challenging scenarios.
G Balaji, Senior Vice President, Energy Industries, ABB India, highlighted that the Vadinar–Bina Pipeline is a strategically important asset for India’s energy supply. He added that ABB executed the modernisation without disrupting pipeline operations or refinery throughput, demonstrating the company’s capability to deliver future-ready, resilient solutions for critical national infrastructure.
