India's power consumption saw a slight increase of approximately 1%, reaching 140.47 billion units (BU) in October, compared to the same month last year. This growth was largely attributed to the impact of a higher base effect. In October 2022, power consumption had surged by more than 22%, rising from 113.94 billion units to 139.44 billion units.
The highest supply (peak power demand met) in a single day decreased to 219.22 GW in October 2024, down from 221.53 GW in the same month last year. Peak power demand reached a record high of 250 GW in May this year. The previous record for all-time high peak power demand, 243.27 GW, was recorded in September 2023.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Power had projected a peak power demand of 235 GW during daytime and 225 GW in the evening for May, while for June; it had estimated a peak demand of 240 GW during daytime and 235 GW in the evening. The ministry had also predicted that peak power demand could hit 260 GW during this summer.
Experts stated that October 2024 was the hottest in several decades, as per official data, and noted that power demand as well as consumption witnessed a slight increase, primarily driven by the high base effect.
