Uttar Pradesh is planning to collaborate with leading energy companies, including the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), to establish floating solar power plants and expand its renewable energy capacity. The state has set an aim to generate 14,000 MW of solar power by 2027.
A senior Uttar Pradesh government official stated that plans are underway to set up floating solar projects on seven reservoirs in collaboration with NTPC, Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC), and Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN).
The state has already received investment proposals for new and renewable energy projects totalling Rs 7 trillion, with Rs 57,000 crore worth of projects falling under the UP State Bio Energy Policy 2022. The Yogi Adityanath government is also exploring large-scale solar power initiatives, including solar parks with a combined capacity of 4,800 MW, for which the tender process is currently underway.
He noted, "Our aim is not just to ensure 100% power availability, but also to rely on green and renewable energy as a key pillar in our vision of transforming the state into a trillion-dollar economy."
To achieve energy self-sufficiency within three years, the state has set a goal of connecting 2.5 million homes to solar power through the 'PM Surya Ghar Yojana'. As of now, 48,000 homes have been equipped with solar panels, and an additional 30,000 homes are expected to be added by the end of the current financial year, 2024-25.
