India's electric mobility leap: The quest for Aatmanirbhar Bharat by 2047

23 Oct 2024

As India approaches the 100th anniversary of its independence in 2047, the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) serves as a compelling framework for transformation rather than just an ambition. This vision transcends mere economic advancement; it aims to redefine the nation’s energy landscape and lead it towards a sustainable future.

Central to this transformative journey toward energy independence is the electric mobility revolution, placing India at a pivotal moment. Shifting the country's road transport sector to electric, shared systems that reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels could potentially decrease energy demand by 57% and cut carbon emissions by 87% as we near 2047.

India is rapidly advancing towards electric mobility. By mid-2024, electric vehicles (EVs) made up 7.5% of the market, a remarkable rise from just 0.7% in 2020. This growth reflects a unified commitment and innovative strategies. However, while we celebrate this achievement, it's crucial to recognise the substantial changes needed to fulfil the country’s vision for 2047.

A recent report co-authored by RMI and the G20 Secretariat highlights that to achieve energy independence in the mobility sector; nearly all vehicles sold by 2043 must be electric. Transitioning to electric mobility is a significant transformation that requires more than gradual adjustments; it demands a bold and comprehensive approach.
