Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (Tata Power-DDL) announced on Monday that it has been granted a 20-year patent for its innovative self-regenerating transformer breather. This device is designed to protect transformers from moisture ingress, thereby enhancing their longevity.
According to the company, the patented technology is expected to significantly reduce maintenance efforts by minimizing the need for silica gel replacement in transformer breathers. With the new system, silica gel will only need to be checked or replaced during routine maintenance, typically conducted every two years. In contrast, conventional systems often require 4-6 replacements within that timeframe.
Developed and tested by Tata Power-DDL's engineering team in December 2015, the self-regenerating breather was pilot-tested in 2016-2017, yielding impressive results. The company filed for the patent in 2016.
The new technology harnesses waste heat from the transformer’s top plate to reduce moisture levels in the air entering the distribution transformer breather, which can help prevent outages and extend transformer life.
Gajanan S. Kale, CEO of Tata Power-DDL, remarked, "This patent showcases our technological advantage, ensuring that our power supply infrastructure is resilient against challenging weather conditions."
