India's power generation capacity increased to 4.46 GW in ten years: MoS Power

India's total installed power generation capacity is set to grow nearly 80 percent in the last 10 years to reach 4,46,190 MW (4.46 GW) in June 2024, Parliament was informed on Monday. The installed capacity, which was 2,48,554 MW in March 2014, reached 4,46,190 MW in June, Union MoS for Power Shripad Naik said.

Responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, he said the installed capacity of coal-based power has increased from 1,39,663 MW in March 2014 to 2,10,969 MW in June 2024. The minister further informed that the installed capacity of the renewable sector has increased from 75,519 MW in March 2014 to 1,95,013 MW in June 2024.

Naik said the Government of India proposes to install a minimum of 80 GW of coal-based additional capacity by 2031-32. He further said 1,95,181 circuit kilometres (CKM) of transmission lines, 7,30,794 MVA transformation capacity, and 82,790 MW of inter-regional capacity have been added, connecting the entire country into a grid that operates at a single frequency and has the capacity to transfer 1,18,740 MW from one corner of the country to another.
