Lockdown constraints amid second wave of Covid-19 a downside risk for electricity demand: ICRA

An official statement claims that the government has taken the necessary steps to meet the anticipated 240 GW of power demand in June and 235 GW of power demand in May. The Ministry of Power said, "We have successfully met the maximum evening power demand of 224 GW during April 2024 with various measures."
The statement stated that the power demand is projected to peak at 235 GW during the daytime and 225 GW during the evening hours in May and 240 GW during the daytime and 235 GW during the evening hours in June 2024. The power ministry has estimated that around 260 GW of peak demand will occur during this summer season.
The ministry said that section 11 directions have been issued to gas-based power plants besides coal-based units to make full capacity available for electricity generation. The optimization of hydropower generation has enabled an additional 4 GW to be available to meet the demand during May and June.
