Lockdown constraints amid second wave of Covid-19 a downside risk for electricity demand: ICRA

India's electricity demand estimated to reach 366 GW by 2030, target of capacity expansion is up to 900 GW

The Union minister for power and new and renewable energy, R. K. Singh, said at the Review, Planning, and Monitoring (RPM) meeting of the Power Sector that India plans to nearly double its power capacity to about 900 GW by 2030, up from the current 427 GW, in response to a surge in demand. The country's peak power demand is projected to reach 366 GW by 2030, significantly higher than the current 243 GW.

A two-day Review, Planning, and Monitoring (RPM) meeting of the power sector is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on January 18–19, 2024, which serves as a strategic forum to deliberate and strategize on the escalating power requirements of the nation. The union power secret union new and renewable energy secretaries, along with other senior officials from Central Public Sector Enterprises, are also scheduled to attend the meeting.
