Lockdown constraints amid second wave of Covid-19 a downside risk for electricity demand: ICRA

Last December, at COP28 in Dubai, when climate diplomats in Dubai debated a plan to phase out fossil fuels, India was grappling with a new energy conundrum. There was a need to increase power capacity rapidly. To meet growing demand, the government of India expects to nearly double coal production to 1.5 billion metric tons by 2030. Later, Power Minister Raj Kumar Singh said on December 22 that he plans to add 88 GW of thermal power plants by 2032, most of which will burn coal.
