Power Minister RK Singh recently said that, amid an increase in power demand, India will add about 12 GW of coal-based power generation capacity by the end of this financial year. The power minister said in a recent interaction that 12 GW of additional capacity and gas-based power plants, which have been kept as reserves, will compensate for the estimated growth in the next financial year. He added that the country has seen an increase of about 20% in electricity demand in the last three months. Earlier, the Power Minister said that a total of about 80 GW of thermal plants are required to be built to meet the growing demand, and the need for private investment in coal-based power generation was emphasized.
