NTPC Aims to 30 GW Coal-Fired Capacity Expansion by FY32

16 Apr 2025

NTPC Ltd plans to increase its coal-based power capacity by an additional 30 GW by FY32, up from its previous target of 26 GW by FY31, in response to the growing demand for base load power in the country, according to the report. The report states that all expansions will be brownfield, with the company having adequate land available for this purpose.

In the current financial year, NTPC is expected to commission approximately 3 GW of thermal power capacity, with 660 MW set to be added in FY25. The company is also likely to award around 8 GW worth of thermal power project contracts, maintaining the same level as the previous fiscal year.

The country's largest integrated power company plans to increase its renewable energy capacity by 5 GW in FY26, up from 3.3 GW in the recently concluded fiscal year. In FY25, NTPC aims to add approximately 3.1 GW, according to its most recent post-earnings conference call report.

The company aims to expand its coal mining capacity and has set a production target of 50 million tonnes for FY26. The 2,800-MW Mahi-Banswara nuclear project, a joint venture with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, is expected to begin work within the next two months, the report added.
