Power Generation to Get a Boost in India; Transmission Infrastructure to Soon Ensure 24x7 Powers to All

02 Jan 2025

India plans to establish more coal-based and hydroelectric power plants, along with upgrading its transmission infrastructure, in order to achieve its goal of providing 24/7 "power for all" by 2025 and to meet the rising demand driven by economic expansion. To address the rising energy demand, the government has chalked out a major plan to increase power generation capacity and to expand transmission infrastructure.

Minister of State for Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, expressed confidence that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ministry's efforts will ensure India can achieve 24/7 power for all. In a recent interaction, Naik stated, "We are on track to accomplish this. By 2025, we will be very close to reaching the goal of providing round-the-clock electricity to everyone in the country."

He also stated that the government is prepared to support the expansion plan of the power sector in view of the growing demand. Government projections indicate that peak power demand is anticipated to reach 270 GW in the summer of 2025, an increase from the record high of 250 GW in May 2024 and 243 GW in September 2023. By 2035, the peak power demand is projected to reach 446 GW.
