"India Now Boasts 25,202 Public EV Charging Stations," Says Minister

24 Dec 2024

Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel, Bhupathiraju Srinivas Varma, said that India has achieved a major milestone in electric mobility with the installation of 25,202 public charging stations nationwide.

In a written response in the Rajya Sabha, the minister shared this information, highlighting the government's efforts to encourage the adoption of EVs and expand charging infrastructure nationwide.

Karnataka Paves the Path Forward

Karnataka leads the country with the highest number of public charging stations, totalling 5,765. Maharashtra follows with 3,728 stations, while Uttar Pradesh has 1,989. Delhi and Tamil Nadu have 1,941 and 1,413 stations, respectively. Also, Chhattisgarh has made significant strides by establishing 271 EV charging stations, according to the minister.

Launch of PM E-DRIVE Scheme

On September 29, the Ministry of Heavy Industries introduced the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme, which aims to boost electric vehicle adoption in India, expand the charging infrastructure, and promote EV manufacturing.

Notably, the initiative has an allocated budget of Rs 10,900 crore over the next two years, with Rs 2,000 crore earmarked specifically for establishing public charging stations. Last week, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) stated that India will need a capital investment of Rs 16,000 crore by 2030 to meet the growing demand for public EV charging infrastructure.
