Lockdown constraints amid second wave of Covid-19 a downside risk for electricity demand: ICRA

India's power consumption in November increased by 5.14%, reaching 125.44 billion units (BU) compared to the same month last year. According to government data, power consumption in November 2023 stood at 119.30 GW. The peak power demand met also saw a slight rise, growing to 207.42 GW in November 2024 from 204.56 GW in the corresponding month of the previous year.
The peak power demand hit a record high of almost 250 GW in May this year, surpassing the previous record of 243.27 GW set in September 2023. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Power projected a peak power demand of 235 GW during the day and 225 GW in the evening for May, while for June, the estimated peak demand for it was 240 GW during the day and 235 GW in the evening.
The ministry had also projected that peak power demand could hit 260 GW this summer. Experts noted that November 2024 was the hottest month in the past four to five years, according to official data. They also mentioned that power demand and consumption have experienced slow growth due to the delayed arrival of winter.
