The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has recognised surface hydrokinetic turbine (SHKT) technology as a cost-effective solution for renewable energy generation, offering power at ?2-3/unit. The move is part of efforts to promote innovation in clean energy and support India's net-zero emissions goals.

SHKT technology generates electricity by harnessing the kinetic energy from flowing water, eliminating the need for traditional civil infrastructure like dams or barrages. It provides an alternative to traditional hydropower systems and is designed to meet the power sector's base-load, round-the-clock renewable energy needs, particularly in regions with limited grid access.

Leveraging Water Infrastructure

The recognition from CEA underscores the promising applications of SHKT technology within India's vast water infrastructure, including canals and hydropower tailrace channels.
