GE Vernova T&D India receives POWERGRID award for 6,000 MW HVDC transmission project

GE Vernova T&D India Limited has received a Letter of Award (LOA) from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited for developing a 6,000 MW High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) terminal station to facilitate renewable power transmission from Barmer II in Rajasthan to South Kalamb in Maharashtra.

The project involves the establishment of a ±800 kV HVDC Line Commutated Converter (LCC) terminal station, comprising two units of 3,000 MW each.

The company had earlier informed the stock exchanges in September 2026 that it had emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for the project.

It has now received the formal Letter of Award dated November 3.

Under the project, GE Vernova T&D India will undertake the design and establishment of the HVDC terminal station.
The company and POWERGRID will execute the definitive agreement at a later stage.

The project is aimed at strengthening India’s inter-regional electricity transmission network and enabling the transfer of large volumes of renewable power from Rajasthan to Maharashtra.

HVDC technology is particularly important for long-distance electricity transmission, as it enables bulk power transfer with lower losses compared with conventional AC transmission over comparable distances.
