The Ministry of Power has approved the export of up to 654 MW of electricity to Nepal from September 13 to December 31, 2026, to help the neighbouring country address power shortages following extensive damage to its hydropower infrastructure caused by recent devastating flash floods.
Under the approval, electricity will be supplied to the Nepal Electricity Authority for 18 hours a day, from 00:00 hours to 18:00 hours, during the period from September 13, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
The approved power export includes up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur–Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit (D/c) line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur–Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit (S/c) line. The quantum of electricity to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026.
The recent flash floods have caused significant damage to Nepal’s hydropower infrastructure, reducing the country’s domestic power generation capacity and creating an additional requirement for electricity. The approved power supply is expected to help Nepal meet its electricity requirements during this difficult period.
The move also reinforces the longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal, with India continuing its support for Nepal and its efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
