
Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (POWERGRID) has approved an investment of ₹856.94 crore to upgrade two key 400 kV double-circuit transmission corridors in Tamil Nadu through reconductoring with High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS) conductors. The project is aimed at increasing power transfer capacity across the southern grid without requiring additional transmission towers or right-of-way.
The approved works cover the Tirunelveli–Udumalpet and Pugalur–Madurai 400 kV transmission lines. By replacing conventional conductors with HTLS technology, POWERGRID expects to significantly enhance the current-carrying capacity of these strategic corridors while utilising the existing transmission infrastructure. The investment has been sanctioned under the company’s Additional Capital Expenditure programme.
The transmission upgrade is scheduled to be completed within 24 months, with commissioning targeted by February 2028. The strengthened network will support rising electricity demand in the Southern Region, facilitate greater integration of renewable energy and improve the reliability of inter-state power transmission.
The latest approval forms part of POWERGRID’s broader strategy of modernising existing transmission assets through technology-led upgrades rather than greenfield expansion wherever feasible. Reconductoring with HTLS conductors enables utilities to unlock additional transmission capacity, reduce congestion and improve grid resilience while minimising land acquisition and environmental impact.
