Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has successfully commissioned its Second-Generation (2G) Bioethanol Refinery at Bargarh, according to a company communication to stock exchanges on March 24, 2026.
The facility is designed to produce 100 kilolitres per day (KL/day) of fuel-grade bioethanol using rice straw as feedstock. It employs advanced lignocellulosic technology, along with pretreatment and fermentation processes, for ethanol production.
The refinery has been developed as a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant incorporating solid-liquid separation systems, ensuring efficient resource utilisation and adherence to environmental standards.
The project supports India’s E20 Ethanol Blending Programme and the National Biofuels Policy, contributing to emission reduction and promoting a circular economy through the utilisation of agricultural residue.
BPCL stated that the project was delivered safely, achieving approximately 20 million loss time accident (LTA)-free manhours, reflecting strong execution standards and operational discipline.
