Tamil Nadu Launches 220 Electric Buses to Enhance Metro Connectivity

Tamil Nadu has introduced a fleet of 220 electric buses to improve last-mile connectivity for commuters travelling to and from metro stations. The initiative is aimed at making access to the metro system easier and more convenient while encouraging greater use of public transport.

The new buses will operate as feeder services connecting metro stations with nearby residential areas, commercial zones and transit hubs. By bridging the gap between metro stations and surrounding neighbourhoods, the service is expected to help commuters complete their journeys more smoothly without relying heavily on private vehicles.

The fleet includes air-conditioned electric microbuses, designed to run on short urban routes and provide comfortable travel for passengers. The buses are planned to operate on multiple routes around metro stations to support daily commuters and strengthen integration between different modes of urban transport.

These vehicles are also equipped with modern passenger amenities such as CCTV cameras, GPS tracking, panic buttons, passenger information systems and automatic fare collection systems, ensuring improved safety and convenience during travel.

The rollout forms part of the state’s broader push toward clean and sustainable mobility, while also supporting the expanding metro network. By improving last-mile connectivity and offering environmentally friendly transport options, the electric bus fleet is expected to play a key role in strengthening urban public transport infrastructure.
