India has achieved a significant milestone as its total installed electricity capacity reached 500.89 GW as of September 30, 2025, according to official data. Notably, non-fossil fuel sources — including renewables, large hydro and nuclear — now account for just over 51 % (256.09 GW) of the total.

The surge in non-fossil capacity reflects strong additions in solar and wind power this year, surpassing fossil-fuel based capacity additions by a wide margin. The progress positions India ahead of schedule in meeting its COP26 “Panchamrit” goal of having half of its installed power capacity come from clean energy sources by 2030.

Officials say the milestone underscores India’s growing leadership in the global energy transition, achieved while maintaining grid reliability and stability. As the nation accelerates efforts toward net-zero and energy security, the expansion of renewables is playing an increasingly central role in the country’s power strategy.
